%X Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, a technique of proximal soil sensing, has been used to quantify physical and chemical soil attributes. Spectral signatures are generated from the electromagnetic energy reflected from the ground, being able to reflect or absorb energy. Latosols, Cambisols, Nitosols and Neosols are classes of soils of greater occurrence in the region. The aim of this study was to evaluate a spectroradiometer of lower cost, FieldSpec HandHeld II (ASD Inc.), operating in the spectrum range of 325-1075nm for prediction of soil organic matter (SOM). A total of 539 soil samples were collected in the Marombas river watershed in a mountainous plateau in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. Spectral analyzes were performed in a controlled environment, collected spectral signatures were processed with The Unscrambler X 10.3 software and R programing language. Modeling was performed with PLSR technique (partial least squares regression) where 377 samples (70%) were used for calibration and 162 samples (30%) for validation. The validation model has achieved a R² of 0.45 and RMSE of 0.87 % for SOM prediction. The mean standard error presented a high value (%), but even so, it was verified that a lower cost spectroradiometer has potential for soil attribute prediction, nevertheless further studies have to be conducted specially regarding preprocessing of the soil spectral signatures.
